Storyline

A patrol team from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan headed to Morobo from Yei, on an assessment mission today (25 Apr), turned back citing security concerns after encountering fallen trees purposefully laid across their main route, about 20 kilometres away from Yei.

The team of Human Rights, Civil Affairs and Military personnel found trees chopped and placed along the road each about 150 meters apart.

The team intended to visit Morobo to make an assessment of the situation in the town. Along the way from Yei to Morobo, the patrol team witnessed most homes and houses have been abandoned, some burnt.

The assessment team travelled to Yei last week on a mission aimed at monitoring and reporting their findings.

Speaking on the ground in Yei, Human Rights Officer, Antony Nwapa highlighted a deteriorating situation.

He said “the situation is deteriorating, and there is need for us to arrest it, and push forward for the agenda for peace, reconciliation, dialogue and as well as to ensure that the people are able to enjoy the dividends of democracy.”

Yei Town has been experiencing repeated cases of violations, and people have abandoned their homes and left to neighbouring countries. There have also been some reported cases of looting, raping and beating of civilians.

The governor of the area, David Lokonga, confirmed the complex security situation. He said “this is a group of people who are anti-peace, and we as a government we can say we can try our best to make sure that either they surrender themselves to the government or we try to find them in the towns, especially like Yei.”

Teams have been traveling to Yei following a deterioration of security to monitor, investigate and report Human Rights violations and also assess the security and humanitarian situation, and report back on what can be done to help residents, following unrest over the last few months that rocked the area, located to the southern part of South Sudan.
