3. SOUNDBITE (English) Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, European Union:
“Let me say that some believed in these recent months that our sixtieth anniversary, our sixtieth birthday, would also mark the beginning of the end for the European Union; the beginning of the European Union's decline. Indeed, our British friends have decided to leave us which is very sad for all of us, but life goes on and the European Union as well goes on. Since the UK referendum last year, we Europeans have recommitted. We have recommitted to being the strong and united power that our citizens and our partners need and deserve.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, European Union:
“So let me be very clear and speak directly to our American friends. It is essential for us that we all keep investing in these UN Agencies. They are as important to global peace and security as defence spending, and sometimes even more. And we, Europeans, consider this support to the UN system as a crucial investment in our own security.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, European Union:
“I believe the greatest divide in today's world is between those who believe that international politics are a zero-sum game, and those who work to build win-win solutions and common ground. The European way is in a constant search for win-win solutions. And the essence of the United Nations is to represent a space where compromise can always prevail over confrontation. This is why I say the European way is the UN way.”

9. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Petr V. Iliichev, First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations:
“The beginning of the implementation of the political aspects can only be done by Kiev which stubbornly stonewalls the process. For the time being Brussels continues with an antagonistic mentality relying on counter-Russian sanctions. This simply creates in Ukraine a feeling of impunity and an ability to act in a reckless manner.”

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, European Union:
“There is a lot for the Syrians to gain out of a peace deal and I believe that the Syrian parties should now demonstrate in Geneva the readiness to find their own political solution to the crisis and the international community will gather to support this part.”

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, European Union:
“It’s clear to me that Europeans have now focused on what there is to lose and on the fact that what can sound attractive in an electoral speech might become scary if it turns into a reality; and that when they face the reality of political choices, as they do through elections, they know what to choose.”

EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said recent elections in several European countries proved that Europeans “have now focused on what there is to lose and on the fact that what can sound attractive in an electoral speech might become scary if it turns into a reality.”
Mogherini today (09 May) told the Security Council the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the Union was “very sad for all of us, but life goes on and the European Union as well goes on.” She said some believed that the decision would mark the “beginning of the end” for the EU, however Europeans instead have “recommitted to being the strong and united power that our citizens and our partners need and deserve.” She said the Future of the EU would not stop at 27 members as it looked forward to welcoming new members starting with the Balkan States.
Mogherini said the greatest divide in today's world “is between those who believe that international politics are a zero-sum game, and those who work to build win-win solutions and common ground.” She noted that the “European way” was in a constant search for win-win solutions to all international issues from climate change to peace and security, adding that the UN “represent a space where compromise can always prevail over confrontation.” Mogherini called on the United States (US) to keep investing in UN agencies stressing that they “are as important to global peace and security as defence spending, and sometimes even more” and hoped that the US would continue to find ways to remain committed to the Paris Agreement on climate change.
The EU foreign policy chief said her organization did not see international rules as a threat, rather a protection to every nation’s autonomy and territorial integrity. She said this is why the EU would never recognise Russia’s annexation of Crimea and will continue to work to bring the conflict in the eastern Ukraine to an end.
Russian ambassador Petr Iliichev said efforts to resolve the conflict must be focused implementing the political aspects of the Minsk agreement including providing Donbas with special status, amnesty for its citizens, the separation of sides and humanitarian demining. He said this would be impossible without developing direct dialogue between Donetsk and Lugansk. Iliichev stressed that the beginning of the implementation of the political aspects could only be done by the Ukrainian Government “which stubbornly stonewalls the process.” He said the EU continued “with an antagonistic mentality relying on counter-Russian sanctions” on this issue which “simply creates in Ukraine a feeling of impunity and an ability to act in a reckless manner.”
Speaking to reporters following the Security Council meeting, Mogherini welcomed UN envoy Staffan de Mistura to resume intra-Syrian talks in Geneva next week. She said “there is a lot for the Syrians to gain out of a peace deal” adding that the Syrian parties “should now demonstrate in Geneva the readiness to find their own political solution to the crisis and the international community will gather to support this part.”
