“Regardless of the circumstances, a person cannot find comfort anywhere other than his home.”
Six years of war left little of Homs standing. After moving five times, al-Haje family decided to return home. Abdul Kader said he was in awe by the sheer level of destruction.

Abdul Kader returned here with his wife and three children. He said it took them some time to accept the reality.

With the help of a local NGO, the family was able to get a power line and running water. They slowly started cleaning and removing the rubble to try to bring back some sense of normalcy. Fourteen-year old Dania describes the family’s struggle away from home.

Many neighbourhoods in Old Homs now look like this. Only a few families are able to call the ruins home.
