For the first time all the different challenges for the ocean have been discussed here at the heart of the UN, in the General Assembly and we’ve broken down the silos and the fragmentation that has for too long been a curse for our oceans.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Isabella Lövin, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for International Development Cooperation and Climate, Sweden:

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Isabella Lövin, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for International Development Cooperation and Climate, Sweden:
“Rich countries need also to support developing countries that don’t have waste management that don’t have proper recycling possibilities but there are technics to do that. And also, we need the private sector; we need enterprises to take their responsibility on single-use plastics, on not overfishing and on being more transparent. There is so many things that we need to do and I think what is important with this conference is that we really put it all on the table making it so evident for the whole world that we cannot let this go on for another year even, we have to take action now.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Peter Thomson, President of the General Assembly, United Nations:
“Our aim was high. Our aim was to start the reversal of the cycle of decline that the ocean is caught in, that humanity has put the ocean into. One thing that I am sure of is that from this conference onwards nobody can say “oh, we weren’t aware of how bad it was.”

Storyline

Briefing reporters in New York on the closing day of the Ocean Conference, President of the UN General Assembly, said “from this conference onwards nobody can say oh, we weren’t aware of how bad it was.”

Taking place in New York from 5 to 9 June, the Ocean Conference, first of its kind, was pegged to be the game changer that will reverse the decline in the health of our ocean for people, planet and prosperity.

The co-chair of the conference, the Minister for International Development Cooperation and Climate of Sweden, Isabella Lövin said “for the first time all the different challenges for the ocean have been discussed here at the heart of the UN, in the General Assembly and we’ve broken down the silos and the fragmentation that has for too long been a curse for our oceans.”

Lövin also said that the week-long conference was characterized by “determination to turn the tide for the ocean, to stop the marine litter, to fight illegal fisheries, to reduce the impact of climate change and to bring back ocean resilience and ocean health.”

Swedish Minister underlined that there is no time to waste.

Lövin said “there is so many things that we need to do and I think what is important with this conference is that we really put it all on the table making it so evident for the whole world that we cannot let this go on for another year even, we have to take action now.”

So far, conference organizers have recorded more than 1200 voluntary pledges from governments, enterprises and civil society.

The host of the conference, the president of the United Nations General Assembly Peter Thomson said he is very satisfied by the outcome of the conference.

Thomson said “our aim was to start the reversal of the cycle of decline that the ocean is caught in, that humanity has put the ocean into. One thing that I am sure of is that from this conference onwards nobody can say “oh, we weren’t aware of how bad it was.”

The conference is expected to identify ways and means to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 – which is to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
