The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said it was providing 50,000 litres of safe drinking daily water to people displaced from the violence in Raqqa living in and around the Ain Issa camp.
UNICEF said more than 6,000 people who have fled the ongoing unrelenting violence in Raqqa city are staying in the camp, 50 kilometres north of the city, with another 3,000 living in the surroundings of the camp. UNICEF added that the numbers continue to rise as violence escalates in the area.
The Fund noted that conditions for internally displaced families in the camp are extremely harsh, especially with the scorching heat in tents. UNICEF said it was scaling up its response with its partners as needs continue to outpace the already limited infrastructure in the camp.
In addition to the daily drinking water delivery, UNICEF is distributing nutrition and hygiene supplies, and has set up 100 latrines and 48 shower units inside the camp. It said most of these families arrive in the camp almost empty-handed.
