Storyline

With almost ten thousand children living in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan’s Protection of Civilians site in Juba it is hard for those residents there to be hopeful, but they are.

SOUNDBITE (English) Santino Chab Nor Gatwech, Student, Hope Primary School in POC 3, Juba:
“I hope that if there is a peace in South Sudan. I hope each other would live in peace and harmony without fighting again so that we live comfortable, like the rest of the countries.”

Santino is a 16-year-old boy who has been in the POC since January 2014. His father was killed in the fighting that started in December 2013. He is the oldest boy of his 9 siblings so he has the task of looking after them and his Mother. Despite having this huge task he has managed to attain the post of Head-Boy at his school. He says he misses his life before the fighting.

SOUNDBITE (English) Santino Chab Nor Gatwech, Student, Hope Primary School in POC 3, Juba:
“I miss a lot of things. See, I was outside I play with those of my brothers that are even from different tribes, but now I miss them and even we used to go somewhere else but now in this POC nowhere to go. We’re just living in one place.”

Despite missing his old life and friends, Santino remains focused on achieving his goals. He helps at the Catholic Church in the POC as an Altar boy and wants to pursue a career path that will allow him to help South Sudan develop.

SOUNDBITE (English) Santino Chab Nor Gatwech, Student, Hope Primary School in POC 3, Juba:
“I want to be an engineer when I grow up so our country is new and developed and everything will be ok.”

Mary is the Deputy Head-girl at the Hope Primary school. She too has been in the POC in Juba since January 2014 and misses her life before the crisis of 2013.

SOUNDBITE (English) Mary Nyaweitea Bol Student, Hope Primary School in POC 3, Juba:
“I miss many of my friends outside there, my sisters, those who go to Uganda because of war.”

Mary says that even though she is not living in her house on the outside anymore she is happy that she can still go to school and get an education. She is the top student in her class and her favourite subjects are math and science. These will help her with her career choice.

SOUNDBITE (English) Mary Nyaweitea Bol Student, Hope Primary School in POC 3, Juba:
“I want to be a Doctor, because here in South Sudan there is no real Doctor.”

Mary is well on her way to becoming exactly what she wants to be. She is hopeful that peace will come and things can go back to being normal again.

SOUNDBITE (English) Mary Nyaweitea Bol Student, Hope Primary School in POC 3, Juba:
“I want our South Sudan to live in peace and we don’t want tribalism again amongst the people loving each other.”

Mary and Santino may come from different families and different circumstances but today they find themselves in the same situation and with the same mind-set. They both hope for a better South Sudan.
