“When the Treaty opened for signature, I was 5 years old. Now I am 26 and the Treaty is not yet in force. And that’s why I think that our main task, as youth, as the young generation, is to advance the idea of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, of nuclear arms reduction.”

“The work that they’re doing with the CTBT is among the most important work there is to do; nuclear proliferation, stopping an arms race, stopping the new development of nuclear weapons, what could be more important than that? You have all of these scientists and engineers all doing great work at the top of their field and they are sharing it to you live.”

“We need to close the door on nuclear testing and our young generation can play a very important role on two different fronts.”

“The reason I decided to come to this conference there were two main goals. I wanted to expand my knowledge base of nuclear testing issues and CTBT. And secondly what I expect is to learn what more I can do.”

For the first time, a large of group of young people from countries such as China, Pakistan, Russia, Indonesia, Kenya, and the United States participated in the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban-Treaty Organization’s Science and Technology Conference, determined to put an end to nuclear testing.
They interviewed and met with key figures, such as CTBTO Executive Secretary Lassina Zerbo who felt that the task of ending nuclear testing was on the shoulders of the young generation.

They also came together to try and figure out what they could do to support the work of CTBTO and to ensure the Treaty enters into force.

Youth reporters also met scientists working in the different fields underpinning the work of the CTBTO: seismic, hydroacoustic, infrasound and radionuclide.

The experts explained how the monitoring system works and also pointed out the many other possibilities to use the data generated by the monitoring system.

More than 1,000 representatives from science and diplomacy gathered in Vienna, Austria for the sixth edition of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban-Treaty Organization’s Science and Technology Conference from 26 to 30 June 2017.
