The Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, El Ghassim Wane, briefed the Security Council on South Sudan today (20 Jul) and warned that the security environment remains extremely volatile and stressed that South Sudan needs an effective and credible ceasefire.

He said that the peace process faces numerous challenges that must be overcome if we are to make the most of the opportunity created by the deployment of the regional protection force and put the country back on track to peace and stability.

Also briefing the Council’s members via videolink from Juba, Festus Mogae, Chairman, Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) said that on 2 July, the IGAD Council of Ministers agreed guidelines and a timeframe for implementation of the High-Level Revitalization Forum to “discuss concrete measures, to restore permanent ceasefire, to implement fully the Peace Agreement and to develop a revised and realistic timeline and implementation schedule towards a democratic election at the end of the transition period”.
