Last year, nine-year-old Laith Shaban Alomr lost six family members to the ongoing conflict in Syria including his mother, father and siblings. For three nights after their death, he slept alongside their remains until he was discovered.
Gunmen attacked his home in Syria, as the child hid in fear.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Laith Shaban Alomr, orphaned child:
“I hid and stayed hiding for two days. I went down, I called them from the roof and no one answered. I went down, drank water, and went back and hid.”
Locals found Laith on the third day. He now lives with his grandmother, Shamsa, in this former school in Homs. They survive on aid provided by the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) and its partners.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Shamsa, Laith’s grandmother:

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Shamsa, Laith’s grandmother:

Shamsa lost all her family in the war, except Laith.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Shamsa, Laith’s grandmother:

Laith still has dreams like any other child. His goal is now to help others.
