The United Nations Security Council strongly condemned today (29 Aug) the North Korean ballistic missile launch which flew over Japan adding that the country is “deliberately undermining regional peace and stability.”
In a Presidential Statement read by Egyptian ambassador Amr Aboulatta, the Council condemned the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) for its “outrageous actions” and stressed that these actions “are not just a threat to the region, but to all UN Member States.” The Council demanded that the DPRK immediately abandon all nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction “in a complete, verifiable and irreversible manner.” The Security Council reiterated the importance of maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in north-east Asia at large and expressed its commitment to a peaceful, diplomatic and political solution to the situation.
United States ambassador Nikki Haley said all 15 members of the Security Council have spoken in unison in demanding that North Korea stop any future missile launches and abandon its nuclear weapons. She stressed that the United States “will not allow” North Korea’s “lawlessness” adding that the “rest of the world is with us.” She said, “The world is united against North Korea; there is no doubt about that. It is time for the North Korean regime to recognize the danger they are putting themselves in.”
Japanese ambassador Koro Bessho welcomed the Presidential Statement adding that it “demonstrates the unity of the Security Council and sends a strong and clear message to North Korea that the international community will not accept its reckless behaviour.” He urged North Korea to “respond immediately to this call by the international community.”
Chinese ambassador Liu Jieyi said his country opposes the DPRK’s launch actions which are in violation of Security Council resolutions. He called on all parties to exercise restraint and avoid provocative actions which could exacerbate the situation. Liu called for the resumption of the six party talks (China, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Russia, and the United States) adding that China is committed to the denuclearization of the Korea Peninsula. He said China opposes “any chaos or war on the Peninsula” and stressed that “enhancing military deployment on the Peninsula will not help towards achieving the goal of denuclearization or regional stability.” Lui said the deployment of the THAAD system in north-east Asia “severely jeopardizes the regional strategic balance” and will further “escalate tension on the Peninsula making the issue more complicated and intractable.”
