“This Conference is a critical forum for addressing the major arms control, non-proliferation, and security problems facing the international community, and there is perhaps no bigger challenge to the global security environment than North Korea’s continued development of prohibited weapons programs and its increasingly provocative and dangerous actions. We are not here today to debate the dangers posed by North Korea’s UN-proscribed nuclear and ballistic missile programs. The time for debate has long passed; those dangers are clear; and it is now time for concerted action.”

The Conference on Disarmament, held today (30 Aug) at the United Nations (UN) in Geneva, heard presentations by military experts from the Republic of Korea, Japan and the United States on the dimensions of the threat that the nuclear and ballistic missile programmes of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) represented to regional and international peace and security.
The meeting comes in the heels of the DPRK launched a missile on Tuesday that flew over Japan before ditching into the sea.
The UN sponsored Conference on Disarmament, the international community's sole multilateral negotiating body on the issue, also heard many states strongly condemn the latest ballistic missile launches conducted by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Their call on the DPRK to abandon its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes was echoed by numerous Member States.
Senior military officials from South Korea, Japan, and the United States made lengthy technical presentations on North Korea’s weapons programmes and the threat they present for the world peace.
Today's conference on disarmament followed an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in New York on Tuesday evening.
