2. Wide shot, Council Chamber Room
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Robert Wood, Permanent Representative of the United States to the Conference on Disarmament:
“This Conference is a critical forum for addressing the major arms control, non-proliferation, and security problems facing the international community, and there is perhaps no bigger challenge to the global security environment than North Korea’s continued development of prohibited weapons programs and its increasingly provocative and dangerous actions. We are not here today to debate the dangers posed by North Korea’s UN-proscribed nuclear and ballistic missile programs. The time for debate has long passed; those dangers are clear; and it is now time for concerted action.”
4. Wide shot, delegates including DPRK
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Robert Wood, Permanent Representative of the United States to the Conference on Disarmament:
“We do not seek to be a threat to the Kim Jong Un regime. However, we must respond to the serious threats it makes toward the United States and to our allies. We want to be clear to North Korea that the United States has the unquestionable ability and unbending will to defend itself, and its allies.”
6. Wide shot, DPRK showing name tag
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Ju Yong Chol, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK):
“My delegation strongly rejects those and those preposterous stories fabricated by the United States, South Korea and Japan in their so-called fiction like presentation which is designed to shift all responsibility of tensions on the Korean peninsula to the DPRK.”
8. Wide shot, delegates
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Ju Yong Chol, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK):
“If the US fails to act with discretion and persists in its reckless attempt to start for the DPRK, we DPRK will not hesitate to check for the type of counter measures. Any sanctions or pressure on the DPRK to isolate it will meet with failure.”
10. Wide shot, Council Chamber Room
11. SOUNDBITE (English) Kim Inchul, Republic of Korea:
“This is it, with it as it is. There is no addition, no subtraction, and it is a matter of whether there are eyes that do not want to see and ears that do not want to listen.”
12. Close up, ceiling
13. SOUNDBITE (English) Tono Tomoyuki, Ministry of Defence, Japan:
“The improvement of these capabilities in recent years justifies the view that these security threats have entered a new stage. It is necessary for the global community to closely cooperate in requiring North Korea to restrain its provocative actions and observe the relevant Security Council resolutions.”

15. Med shot, power point presentation from the US
The Conference on Disarmament, held today (30 Aug) at the United Nations (UN) in Geneva, heard presentations by military experts from the Republic of Korea, Japan and the United States on the dimensions of the threat that the nuclear and ballistic missile programmes of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) represented to regional and international peace and security.
The meeting comes in the heels of the DPRK launched a missile on Tuesday that flew over Japan before ditching into the sea.
The UN sponsored Conference on Disarmament, the international community's sole multilateral negotiating body on the issue, also heard many states strongly condemn the latest ballistic missile launches conducted by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Their call on the DPRK to abandon its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes was echoed by numerous Member States.
Senior military officials from South Korea, Japan, and the United States made lengthy technical presentations on North Korea’s weapons programmes and the threat they present for the world peace.
Today's conference on disarmament followed an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in New York on Tuesday evening.
