United Nations nuclear watchdog (IAEA) chief Yukiya Amano described North Korea’s recent nuclear test as “extremely regrettable” adding that it was carried out in “complete disregard of the repeated demands of the international community.”
Speaking to the IAEA Board of Governors on Monday (11 Sep), Amano pointed to indications at the Yongbyon Experimental Nuclear Power Plant that the reactor was being operated and that the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s (DPRK) continuation and further development of its nuclear programme are a cause for grave concern. He called upon the DPRK to “comply fully with its obligations under all relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council and the IAEA, to cooperate promptly with the Agency, and to resolve all outstanding issues, including those that have arisen during the absence of Agency inspectors from the country.” Amano added the Agency was enhancing its readiness to play a role in verifying the DPRK’s nuclear programme and remained prepared for its possible return to the country.
On Iran, Amano said the IAEA has been verifying and monitoring the implementation by Iran of its nuclear-related commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) since January 2016. He noted that Iran has been undertaking its JCPOA commitments adding that the Agency “continues to verify the non-diversion of nuclear material declared by Iran under its Safeguards Agreement.”
