Storyline

Marking the International Day of Peace, the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, together with the President of the UN General Assembly Miroslav Lajčák, rang the Peace Bell today (15 Sep) at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Before ringing the Peace Bell, the Secretary-General said “the International Day of Peace is an opportunity to renew our resolve to work for a future free of violence and strife. It is a day we honor those who have fallen in war and we grieve the suffering that conflict causes.”

On the occasion of the Day, Guterres made a plea to combatants worldwide “to lay down their arms and observe a day of ceasefire and non-violence.”

Miroslav Lajčák, President of the UN General Assembly said “one of my main priorities this year is sustaining peace and preventing conflict. It is not enough for the international community to scramble for solutions when the wars have already erupted. Instead, we need to strengthen the ties that bind us together as fellow humans.”

Every year, the UN calls on warring parties around the world to observe a 24-hour ceasefire.

The International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The Day was established in 1981 by the UN General Assembly. Two decades later in 2001, the Assembly unanimously voted to designate the Day as a period of non-violence and ceasefire.

The UN invites all nations and people to honour a cessation of hostilities during the Day, and to otherwise commemorate the Day through education and public awareness on issues related to peace.
