11. SOUNDBITE (Persian) Hassan Rouhani, President, Islamic Republic of Iran:
“The ignorant, absurd, and hateful rhetoric, filled with ridiculously baseless allegations, that was uttered before this august body yesterday, was not only unfit to be heard at the United Nations, which was established to promote peace and respect between nations, but indeed contradicted the demands of our nations from this world body to bring governments together to combat war and terror.”

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said it would be a “great pity” if the nuclear agreement were to be “destroyed by rogue newcomers to the world of politics” adding that his country would not be the first to violate it, but would “respond decisively and resolutely to its violation by any party.”
Addressing the General Assembly today (20 Sep), Rouhani said moderation is the inclination as well as the chosen path of the Iranian people adding that his country believed in dialogue and negotiation based on equal footing and mutual respect. He said the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) is result of two years of intensive multilateral negotiations, overwhelmingly applauded by the international community and endorsed by the Security Council as a part of Resolution 2231. Therefore, he said it belongs to the international community in its entirety, and not to only one or two countries. Rouhani stressed that new US administration “only destroys its own credibility and undermines international confidence in negotiating with it” by violating its international commitments.
Rouhani said, “The ignorant, absurd, and hateful rhetoric, filled with ridiculously baseless allegations, that was uttered before this august body yesterday, was not only unfit to be heard at the United Nations, which was established to promote peace and respect between nations, but indeed contradicted the demands of our nations from this world body to bring governments together to combat war and terror.”
Speaking to reporters outside of the Security Council, Saudi Foreign Minister said he believed there is a “unanimous view that Iran is the chief sponsor of terrorism in the world; that Iran continues to fund, support, and train and arm terrorist groups and provide weapons to militias in various parts of the Middle East; that Iran is engaged in attacks on embassies in violation of international laws and norms; that Iran is involved in the assassination of diplomats and protected persons.” He said Iran has not lived up to the terms of the JCPOA in terms the behaviour expected from the country to promote regional stability. He said his country expects the agreement to result in Iran not being able to ever acquire a nuclear weapon. He also said Saudi expects Iran to abide by the agreement to the letter and for the international community to do whatever it takes to make sure Iran is in compliance with it.
