Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir said the Qatar crisis is a result of his country’s “firm policy to combat extremism and terrorism” adding that Qatar’s policies in the region have “contributed to spread of chaos, the incitement of strife, and destabilized peace and security in the region.”
Speaking at the General Assembly today (23 Sep), Al-Jubeir said Qatar’s policies were “supporting [terrorism], spreading hatful and violent speech, and providing a safe haven for those wanted.” He said the demands, made by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt, were legitimate and call on Qatar to commit to international law and combat terrorism. Al-Jubeir stressed that the Middle East was witnessing an “unprecedented state of tension and continuous crises as a result of the policies of aggression taken by Iran” adding that Iran “is a state sponsor of terrorism and has formed armed terrorist militias.”
The Saudi Foreign Minister said the rebellion carried out by the Houthis and the former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, supported by Iran, represented a threat to the stability and security of Yemen. He said military campaign led by his country in Yemen “was not a choice nor was it a decision made instantaneously, rather it came after sustained political effort which aimed to protect Yemen’s security, stability, national unity, and regional security.” He reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s full support for the political process in Yemen, and pledged to “stand by the side of the United Nations’ efforts through its special envoy.”
