Storyline

Marking the 72nd anniversary of the United Nations in South Sudan, diplomats and government officials listened to the pleas for future from children from the Confident Children out of Conflict orphanage.

Speaking at the event in the capital Juba today (24 Oct), the UN Special Representative of the Secretary General David Shearer re-echoed the voices of the vast majority of the South Sudanese he has met, and urged leaders to “silence the guns and give peace a chance.”

He said “they want to return home, they want their children to go to school. They want to be productive citizens and they want to the above all self-reliant in forging their own future themselves. That’s why South Sudanese everywhere I go urge their leaders to silence the guns and give peace a chance.”

Representing the government at the event, Cabinet Affairs Minister Martin Elia Lomuro said the transitional government of national unity is committed to bringing peace to the country. He said the government is ready to work with partners to restore peace.

Lomuro said “it is very encouraging that you chose ‘United Nations South Sudan Building the Future Together’ as the theme to celebrate this day. This is a very touching theme. One that gives hope to the long-suffering people of South Sudan but also a theme that can inspire the TGoNU (Transitional Government of National Unity) to strengthen its relationship with the United Nations. We are encouraged and we promise to work coherently with the UN and its partners to achieve the intentions of this day’s theme.”

Various UN organisations work in South to protect civilians, build durable peace, and create stability and development within the young nation.

Speaking about the event and the work of the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), the organisation’s Communications Officer Emil Sahakyan said “today is an important day for us because it is an opportunity for all UN agencies including UNHCR to show all the good work they are doing on behalf of the vulnerable populations in South Sudan.”

The UN Day event also saw both Shearer and Eliah Lomuro acknowledging the professionalism, commitment and courage of thousands of staff working for over 20 UN entities in often remote and dangerous locations across the country.

This year’s UN Day theme in South Sudan is ‘United Nations and South Sudan Building the Future Together.’

The UN has been working in South Sudan for over 50 years, providing vital services such as food, access to clean water, sanitation, education, health care, infrastructural development, peacekeeping, policing, de-mining, human rights and other forms of advocacy.
