The United Nations urges the Government of South Sudan and Sudan to actively engaging in the discussion to resolve the deadlock over establishing their temporary arrangement which should lead to the final status of Abyei.

Addressing the Security Council today (26 Oct), Alexander Zuev, Assistant Secretary-General of Department of Peacekeeping said “I urge both governments to consolidate the gains achieved by UNISFA (United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei) at the local level by actively engaging in discussions to resolve deadlock over establishing their temporary arrangements which should lead to determine the final status of Abyei.”

Nicholas Haysom, UN chief’s special envoy for Sudan and South Sudan said that in his continuing engagement with the government of Sudan and South Sudan, he has urged them to “build on the relatively improvement in their relationship, including through bilateral meetings between President al-Bashir and president Kiir, and to take concrete measures to achieve progress on the jointed administration of Abyei and resume discussions on its final status.”

The Sudanese Ambassador Omer Dahab Fadl IMohamed said his country calls upon the Government of South Sudan to “enhance their serious engagement with the government of Sudan and the African Union, in order to speed up the process of forming the Abyei Institution stipulated by the 2011 Agreement in order to determine the final status of Abyei.”

He added that it is “truly and only in the hands of the President of Sudan and South Sudan, according to the agreement signed by the two countries.”

The South Sudanese Ambassador Aknei Bona Malwal said that his country appealed to the international community that “in order to build on the limited peace and tranquillity achieved so far by the Ethiopian peacekeepers, as the report indicates, certain fundamental Humanitarian and Social Services ought to be provided for the people of Abyei.”
