International Monetary Fund (IMF) spokesperson Bill Murray told reporters today (09 Nov) in Washington that the IMF supports maintaining subsidies and economic measures that help the poor in Jordan.
Murray said the IMF’s recommendation “remains to remove tax exemptions that disproportionately benefit higher income groups in Jordanian society while keeping those exemptions related to basic food items.”
The IMF said it supports measures by Jordan’s government to reform its tax structure, but does not recommend lifting bread subsidies and does not recommend economic measures that burden the poor in Jordan.
The Fund said some media reports had misrepresented its position on this issue. It said the design of policy measures must consider the impact on the Jordanian economy and on the poor.
