“We have a populous brand of politics that says we can do it on our own, we don’t need others. In fact, we need more cooperation, more partnerships, not fewer. You have a, I could call it identity politics where we think that we could remain ethnically pure, or culturally pure, and so you have the cruel irony that we have political leaders who try to preserve societies that no longer exist.”

On the margins of a preparatory meeting towards the adoption of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, a top migration official on Tuesday (5 Dec) said the Compact offers “a historic opportunity” to generate a sense of “shared responsibility” for people on the move.
The Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM,) William Lacy Swing, said people on the move “are not covered by any international legal framework for protection and assistance.”
Swing said “we now have more people on the move that at any other time in recorded history. Swing expressed concern over the rise of “a populous brand of politics that says we can do it on our own, we don’t need others.” He said, “identity politics where we think that we could remain ethnically pure, or culturally pure, and so you have the cruel irony that we have political leaders who try to preserve societies that no longer exist.”
The stocktaking meeting being held in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, follows an intensive preparatory process around the world to inform the development of the global compact. The process saw five regional meetings in Santiago (Chile), Beirut (Lebanon), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Bangkok (Thailand) and Geneva (Switzerland). The process also included two multi-stakeholder hearings, seven regional civil society consultations, and numerous national consultations.
On the agenda for the three-day meeting are discussions on the global, regional, sub-regional and national perspectives; perspectives from stakeholders; an ‘Idea Lab’ session which includes ‘TED Talks’ on data and evidence, public perceptions and narratives, and migration and identity; and follow-up and implementation.
