6. SOUNDBITE (French) François Delattre, Permanent Representative of the French Republic to the United Nations:
“The security threat in the Sahel affects us all because of the implication this has for international peace and security. The Joint Force of the G5-Sahel is the right response to this threat, therefore it is crucial for the G5 and the international community to be able together to take this opportunity.”

The United Nations Security Council adopted today a resolution which sets out the parameters for the UN mission in Mali (MINUSMA) to provide operational and logistical support to the G5-Sahel force.
In Resolution 2391, the Council called on the UN mission provide medical evacuations, refuelling, and engineering support to the Joint force in its operations in Mali and set a mechanism for it to be reimbursed for its assistance. It requested that the UN Secretary-General conclude a technical agreement between the United Nations, the European Union, and the G5 Sahel States - Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger.
The Resolution also underlined the need for the force to respect human rights and international law in its operations and expressed deep concern over the persistent delays in implementing the peace agreement in Mali.
French ambassador François Delattre, whose country submitted the resolution for a vote, welcomed the adoption. He said the support to be provided by MINUSMA will be crucial in strengthening the scope of the force’s operations. He said the resolution is “a real new stage, it is an important necessary step forward in terms of the Security Council’s support for the G5-Sahel.”
Delattre said the security threat in the Sahel “affects us all because of the implication this has for international peace and security.” He stressed the Joint Force of the G5-Sahel is “the right response to this threat, therefore it is crucial for the G5 and the international community to be able together to take this opportunity.”
Last February, the leaders of Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso and Chad agreed to establish the G5 Sahel Force. The 5000-strong force is meant to combat terrorism and transactional organized crime in the vast Sahel region, help restore governments’ authority, return millions of refugees and displaced people, and facilitate humanitarian relief.
