Storyline

The eleventh World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial Conference opened in Buenos Aires on 10 December, with a forceful declaration by four Latin American presidents in support of the Organization and its guardianship of the multilateral trading system.

Speaking to delegates, Roberto Azevêdo, the Director-General of WTO said “by any objective measure, the multilateral trading system has delivered. It is a rare example of effective, functioning, vibrant multilateralism – with all the hard work, difficulty and effort that this can sometimes entail.”

The unprecedented show of support by the leaders, amongst are President Mauricio Macri of Argentina, President Michel Temer of Brazil, President Horacio Cartes of Paraguay and President Tabaré Vázquez of Uruguay, comes as hundreds of trade diplomats, journalists and representatives of civil society gather in the Argentine capital for the latest biennial meeting of the WTO's highest decision-making body.

Mauricio Macri, President of Argentina said “this conference offers us a historic opportunity to strengthen the multilateral trading system, with the WTO at its centre. It is important that we continue to believe in this system and its rules, as they are a guarantee of predictability for global trade flows and for their growth.”

Jorge Faurie, the Argentinian Foreign Minister said “the governments of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Guyana, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, and Uruguay are gathered in Buenos Aires on the 10th of December of 2017 on the occasion of the 11th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization.”

Faurie added “they reaffirm multilateralism as the best response in order to harness opportunities and address the challenges faced by international trade. Hence, they ratify the importance of preserving and strengthening the multilateral trading system.”

The eleventh Ministerial Conference (MC11) takes place from 10 to 13 December 2017 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Conference will be chaired by Minister Susana Malcorra of Argentina.
