6. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“The annual Day of commemoration is about the past, but also the future; it is about Jews but also all others who find themselves scapegoated and vilified solely because of who they are. Today we have two fundamental duties. First, to remember the Holocaust and its victims. Second, to be vigilant about hatred today.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“There should be no hierarchies of hatred; all people deserve respect, protection and equality before the law. And all of us have a duty to recognize this right – and to defend it.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:

14. SOUNDBITE (English) Danny Danon, Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations:
“Over the centuries, anti-Semites boycotted the Jewish businesses. They barred the general public from trading with the Jewish community and labelled Jews in an attempt to isolate them. The information published today by the Human Rights Council is more of the same. The Human Rights Council will now join history’s infamous list of anti-Semites and bigots who ultimately failed in their attempts to devastate the Jewish people.”

16. SOUNDBITE (English) Danny Danon, Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations:
“The UN treats the only Jewish state differently than any other state in the world. The way the UN attacks Israel is not just double standard, it is a symptom of antisemitism. In the face of evil, we must adopt an action plan for prevention. We must be up-standers and stand up in the face of evil. We cannot afford to be bystanders.”

19. SOUNDBITE (English) Eva Lavi, The youngest survivor on Schindler’s List:
“It was not easy to be a child survivor after the war. I continued to hide. Why? My parents did not take me to the meeting with other survivors not to hurt the feelings of those that lost their children. I didn’t even go to the meeting with Schindler when he visited Israel. Even now, 73 years after the war, I feel guilty that I survived.”

Storyline

On the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, UN chief António Guterres said the day was “about the past, but also the future” adding that the world must be “vigilant about hatred today.”

Speaking today (31 Jan) at a memorial ceremony honouring the victims of the Holocaust, Guterres said he feels that it is his duty to everything possible to confront anti-Semitism and all forms of discrimination. He said Genocide does not happen in a vacuum adding that the Holocaust was the culmination of hostility toward Jews across the millennia. He added that the world must not lose sight of what went wrong and must stand guard against xenophobia as hatred is rampant in our time.

SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“There should be no hierarchies of hatred; all people deserve respect, protection and equality before the law. And all of us have a duty to recognize this right – and to defend it.”

According to the Anti-Defamation League, there has been a sharp increase in recruitment efforts by white supremacists on college campuses including through targeted hate campaigns against Jews, Muslims and others. The UN chief said the Internet has become the newest instrument for spreading the messages of neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other extremist groups with followers increasing by 600 percent since 2012.

Guterres said, “We must stand together against the normalization of hate; we must reject those who fail to understand that as societies become multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural, diversity must be seen as a source of richness and not a threat.”

The youngest survivor on Schindler’s List, Eva Lavi, also spoke to attendees of the memorial detailing her experiences throughout the war. She said she witnessed things no child should witness, including the murder of her twin cousins.

Cantor Joseph Malovany of the Fifth Avenue Synagogue also recited memorial prayers, and UN staff performed in memory of the victims and survivors of the Holocaust.

Earlier today, the UN Human Right Council (HRC) in Geneva published a report identifying 206 unnamed companies under review conducting business in illegal settlements in the West Bank. The aim is to produce a database of business enterprises engaged in certain, specific activities in the occupied Palestinian territory that are either explicitly linked to Israeli settlements or form part of processes that enable and support the establishment, expansion and maintenance of Israeli residential communities beyond the Green Line.

Speaking at the General Assembly Hall, Israeli ambassador Danny Danon said from “the far corners of the world to the very seats in this room, Israel and Jews remain targets of antisemitism masked as anti-Zionism.” He said the UN chief had declared that anti-Zionism was nothing more than the modern version of anti-Semitism but too many UN Member States still tolerate it.

Danon said UN treats the only Jewish state “differently than any other state in the world.” He said the way the UN attacks Israel is “not just double standard, it is a symptom of antisemitism.” The Israeli ambassador called on people to adopt an action plan for prevention adding, “We must be up-standers and stand up in the face of evil; we cannot afford to be bystanders.”
