Storyline

During a visit to the Far North region of Cameroon, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Ursula Mueller called on international donors to step up their assistance in a “crisis that is not on the focus of the media every day.”

Mueller is on a visit to the region to see first-hand the devastating humanitarian consequences of the ongoing violence affecting the Lake Chad Basin and the Central African Republic (CAR).

Speaking from the Minawao refugee camp today (23 Feb), Mueller said there is an increased need of “life-saving assistance” in the camp which is host to some 62,000 refugees from Nigeria who fled the violence of Boko Haram.

In Cameroon, large-scale displacement fueled by the Boko Haram crisis in the north and the neighboring crisis in CAR are compounding high levels of food insecurity and malnutrition. Humanitarian organizations are redoubling their efforts with the Government and development partners to enhance linkages between emergency response and development programming, including to address protracted displacement.

The UN humanitarian office (OCHA) said countrywide, close to 2.8 million people are food insecure and over 200,000 children are suffering from acute malnutrition. In the Far North region, one out of 3 people, some 1.5 million people, are food insecure at crisis and emergency levels and prevalence of severe acute malnutrition has exceeded the alert threshold of one percent in the region.

OCHA said the UN and its partners need $305 million to provide emergency aid to 1.3 million people in 2018 adding that the humanitarian response in Cameroon is critically underfunded. OCHA noted that the joint humanitarian response plan proposed by the UN and partner NGOs received less than the required funding in 2017.

OCHA said people in Cameroon are facing the consequences of multiples crises fuelled by violence and conflict in the Lake Chad Basin and the Central African Republic as well as socio-political tensions. After Nigeria, Cameroon is the second most affected country in the Lake Chad crisis, in terms of displacement, number of people in food insecurity and children suffering from acute malnutrition. In the eastern and northern regions, the continued conflict in the CAR has led to a massive influx of refugees to Cameroon.
