Marking the International Woman’s Day, the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said “let us demand gender equality and women’s empowerment together. Let us declare loud and clear “The Time is Now.”
Speaking at the General Assembly today (08 Mar) in New York, Guterres said “as we still live in a male dominated world with male dominated culture and until power is fairly shared, the world will remain out of balance. Gender inequality, discrimination and violence against women harm us all.”
The UN chief noted that there is no better path to a more peaceful and prosperous world than the empowerment of women and girls. Despite progress that have been made, Guterres reiterated “we still need to break the structural barriers that women and girls face – unpaid care work, unequal pay, harmful stereotypes, discrimination and violence.”
He called on the international community to “listen to the women and girls who are rightly proclaiming their rights.”
Guterres said “we must join together as partners – women and girls, men and boys – to make gender equality a reality for all. Our aspirations for a world of peace, prosperity, dignity and opportunity for all depend on it.”
Under Guterress Administration, the UN for the first time ever reached gender parity in the Organization’s senior management team, the top level of the Organization, and is close to reach it in relation to the leaders of UN Country Teams, around the world.
