Storyline

The United Nations mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) responded to urgent calls by the community in Bor to deal with the aftermath of floods which interrupted examinations for about 380 students in a local high school.

Heavy rains had hit the town of Bor a few days ago forcing Imperial High School to temporarily shut down with much of its grounds flooded. UNMISS provided the school with truck-loads of soil in order to raise the surface of the ground so students can go back to school and finish exams.

SOUNDBITE (English) Arok Gabriel, Student, Imperial High School:
“Actually, first of all I would like to thank UNMISS for this great support. When the school was being occupied by the flood we were being frustrated; we were being discouraged. We had nowhere to go.”

Korean peacekeeping engineers were on the site to direct the effort which included local community members who came out to help spread the dirt across the school yard.

SOUNDBITE (English) Philip Aguer Panyang, Governor, Jonglei:
“I think it means good relations between the UNMISS and the civil population and understanding quickly the challenges that are facing this community. It is a sign of a response at a needy time.”

UNMISS said ensuring children had an education was worth the effort which included ploughing through mud and working long hours in temperatures well above 40 degrees Celsius.

SOUNDBITE (English) Deborah Schein, Head of Field Office, United Nations:
“It is always worth it when you are trying to promote education and the children’s education. That’s why we are here; we are here to support the people of South Sudan. And we are here to support a lasting peace in South Sudan; and education is the foundation for the future of South Sudan.”

Since 2013, South Sudan has been facing a conflict which has devastated its economy.
