United Nations officials and agencies today (4 Jun) “expressed their outrage over the weekend following the killing on Friday in Gaza of Razan al-Najjar, a 21-year-old woman volunteering as a first responder,” according to a UN spokesperson.
Stéphane Dujarric, who is the Spokesperson Secretary-General António Guterres, said al-Najjar was “carrying out her humanitarian duties with the Palestinian Medical Relief Society” and noted that “three other people in her team were also injured.”
Dujarric quoted Humanitarian Coordinator Jamie McGoldrick and said, “healthcare workers must be allowed to perform their duties without fear of death or injury,” adding that “the killing of a clearly-identified medical staffer by security forces during a demonstration was particularly reprehensible.”
According to media reports, al-Najjar, a member of the Palestinian Medical Relief Society (PMRS), was hit by live ammunition fired by Israeli forces while trying, with other first responders, to reach those injured during Friday’s demonstrations against Israeli policies in Gaza, dubbed the ‘the Great March of Return’.
