“For four long years, the underlying dynamics have not improved. The humanitarian crisis has deepened, the political stalemate between Hamas and Fatah has worsened, and the prospect of another deadly round of violence is growing by the day. Only through the repeated, collective efforts of all sides has another catastrophic escalation been averted over the past weeks.”

“After intense efforts by the United Nations and Egypt, I can report that the situation is calming down, although tensions remain. I returned to Jerusalem from Gaza just an hour ago and am hopeful that with collective efforts by all sides we can avoid another confrontation, allow Palestinians in Gaza and Israelis in communities across the border to sleep in peace, and begin addressing all humanitarian issues.”

“A few hours ago, the IDF reported that it fired two missiles, which shot down a Syrian fighter jet that they claim had infiltrated nearly two kilometres into Israeli airspace. We are closely monitoring the situation. These hostilities demonstrate a disturbing trajectory of increasingly frequent and dangerous confrontations. I call on all parties to abide by all the provisions of the 1974 agreement and support the role of UNDOF in that regard.”

“Israel warned Syria not to breach the 1974 separation of forces agreement. Israel will not allow any violation of our sovereignty.”

“We will not allow the Iranians to build their bases next to our borders in the Golan Heights. This is our policy and Prime Minister Netanyahu is very clear about this when he meets Mr. Putin, when he meets Mr. Trump, whoever he will meet, he will tell them the same, we will not allow the Iranians to build their bases next to Israel.”

The Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nickolay Mladenov, today (24 Jul) said that “four long years” since the last war in Gaza, “the underlying dynamics have not improved,” and “only through the repeated, collective efforts of all sides has another catastrophic escalation been averted over the past weeks.”
Mladenov said during the past four years “the humanitarian crisis has deepened, the political stalemate between Hamas and Fatah has worsened, and the prospect of another deadly round of violence is growing by the day.”
The Special Coordinator said that “after intense efforts” by the United Nations and Egypt, “the situation is calming down, although tensions remain.”
He expressed hope that “with collective efforts by all sides we can avoid another confrontation, allow Palestinians in Gaza and Israelis in communities across the border to sleep in peace, and begin addressing all humanitarian issues.”
Today, he reported, the first 100,000 litres of much-needed fuel were allowed through the Kerem Shalom crossing to be distributed by the UN, which is prioritizing hospitals and emergency services.
Turning to Syria, Mladenov informed the Council that “a few hours ago,” the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) reported that “it fired two missiles, which shot down a Syrian fighter jet that they claim had infiltrated nearly two kilometres into Israeli airspace.”
He said “these hostilities demonstrate a disturbing trajectory of increasingly frequent and dangerous confrontations. I call on all parties to abide by all the provisions of the 1974 agreement and support the role of UNDOF in that regard.”
Outside the Council, Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon said “Israel warned Syria not to breach the 1974 separation of forces agreement” adding Israel will not allow any violation of our sovereignty.”
