“It is sad what’s going on in Venezuela, because this is a dictatorship which has curtailed all freedoms; which has persecuted the people; and which has caused the current humanitarian crisis and this serious migratory crisis. We wanted to raise this issue to the attention of the international community. We will do it when we address the General Assembly, because the world needs a true and effective diplomatic siege so that this dictatorship can come to an end and freedom and democracy can return to Venezuela.”

“We have committed ourselves so that there can be effective disarmament, demobilization, and reinsertion. So that people who truly have committed to make that transition will have our support, and we will comply with the word of the state, as well as the investment in the regions of Colombia that have been affected by violence. We also want to introduce a very strong rural reform, so that we have public goods, and we generate an expansion of the rural middle class in Colombia. And we have a very strong commitment that we can solve these matters of illegal crops and narcotrafficking, which are also part of the agreement. But I have said that we will have zero tolerance if there are members or former members of that organization that that want to continue in criminal activities.”

SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Iván Duque Márquez, President, Colombia:
“We don’t want to see a society where illegal crops became the fuel of terrorism, harmful to the environment, and an institutional corruptor. We no longer want to see a society where drug use continues to increase, and where younger and younger children are initiated in those practices. Therefore, our focus is holistic, our measures are holistic, and I celebrate that today the world, with 130 countries signing on to the declaration, is saying, we are not going to give up, we are going to continue to make an effort to achieve better successes.”

The President of Colombia, Iván Duque Márquez, today (24 Sep) said the government of Venezuela “is a dictatorship which has curtailed all freedoms; which has persecuted the people; and which has caused the current humanitarian crisis and this serious migratory crisis.”
Duque said, “the world needs a true and effective diplomatic siege so that this dictatorship can come to an end and freedom and democracy can return to Venezuela.”
Turning to the peace process in Colombia, Duque, who has been in office since 7 August said, “people who truly have committed to make that transition will have our support, and we will comply with the word of the state, as well as the investment in the regions of Colombia that have been affected by violence.”
But he stressed that the government “will have zero tolerance if there are members or former members of that organization that that want to continue in criminal activities.”
On the issue of illicit Drugs, following this morning’s High-level counter narcotics event, the Colombian President said, “we don’t want to see a society where illegal crops became the fuel of terrorism, harmful to the environment, and an institutional corruptor. We no longer want to see a society where drug use continues to increase, and where younger and younger children are initiated in those practices.”
130 countries signed on to a declaration at the High-level Event, which was convened by the United States.
