3. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Jorge Alberto Arreaza Montserrat, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Venezuela:
“In Venezuela there is a full democracy. In the last year we have had elections of the National Constituent Assembly, state governors, mayoral elections, presidential elections; everyday there are elections in our community councils, our communities. It is a democratic society, but not only because there are elections, but also because the system for decision-making and interaction with the people are intrinsically democratic.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Jorge Alberto Arreaza Montserrat, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Venezuela:
“We are concerned about Colombia. There is no dialogue. With Foreign Minister María Ángela Holguín we had conversations up until her last day in office. Sometimes tense conversations, sometimes friendly, but always respectful, and we never cut the dialogue. With Mr. Holmes Trujillo, I have called him to his office; I have called him to different numbers we were given; I have sent him letters. I don’t know if today he needs to ask for authorization from Vice-President Pence, since they are talking about troops along the border, so that Vice-President Pence will allow Colombia’s Foreign Minister to meet with Venezuela’s Foreign Minister.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Jorge Alberto Arreaza Montserrat, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Venezuela:
“Now they are withdrawing from international organizations, they are withdrawing from multilateral agreements, climate change, Human Rights Council, migration compact, and many others. Because they don’t believe in the multilateral system. They believe in unilateralism, they believe in domination, as if they owned the world. A dictatorship? They are a dictatorship. Not Maduro’s. Not. Trump wants to be the Dictator for the whole world, but it will not be possible because the world will not allow it. The UN has to do more. The UN has been too lukewarm. It must stand up to President Trump after so many attacks to multilateralism.”

9. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Jorge Alberto Arreaza Montserrat, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Venezuela:
“If you blockade a country, there are no raw materials for production. If here is difficulty accessing to certain medicines, as well as foodstuffs, people will get desperate, some will leave, and others will get angry, to say the least. That is the game, I strangle you, and they I save you. When you are about to die because I am strangling you, I say, here is some humanitarian aid.”

Storyline

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela, Jorge Arreaza, today (25 Sep) said his country is a “full democracy,” not only because there are elections, but also because “decision-making and interaction with the people are intrinsically democratic.”

Arreaza said Venezuela is “concerned about Colombia” as “there is no dialogue.”

He said that with the previous Minister of Foreign Affairs, María Ángela Holguín, “we had conversations up until her last day in office. Sometimes tense conversations, sometimes friendly, but always respectful, and we never cut the dialogue.”

Arreaza said that dialogue has been cut with the current minister, Carlos Holmes Trujillo. He said, “I have called him to his office; I have called him to different numbers we were given; I have sent him letters. I don’t know if today he needs to ask for authorization from Vice-President Pence, since they are talking about troops along the border, so that Vice-President Pence will allow Colombia’s Foreign Minister to meet with Venezuela’s Foreign Minister.”

The Minister said the United States is “withdrawing from international organizations, they are withdrawing from multilateral agreements, climate change, Human Rights Council, migration compact, and many others.”

He said US President Donald Trump “wants to be the Dictator for the whole world, but it will not be possible because the world will not allow it,” adding that “the UN has to do more. The UN has been too lukewarm. It must stand up to President Trump after so many attacks to multilateralism.”

Speaking about the humanitarian situation in Venezuela, Arreaza said, “if you blockade a country, there are no raw materials for production. If here is difficulty accessing to certain medicines, as well as foodstuffs, people will get desperate, some will leave, and others will get angry, to say the least. That is the game, I strangle you, and they I save you. When you are about to die because I am strangling you, I say, here is some humanitarian aid.”

US Vice President Mike Pence and Holmes Trujillo held a bilateral meeting behind closed door on the side-lines of the General Assembly General Debate, after which the US committed 48 million US dollars in humanitarian aid to Venezuelan refugees in the region.
