“Latin America is home to 14 of the 25 countries with the highest rates of femicide in the world. 98 percent of gender related killings go unprosecuted. The 50 million Euro investment we are here announcing today will go into action to address legislative and policy gaps, strengthen the institutions that carry out this work, promote attitudes of gender equality, provide quality services to survivors, and reparations to victims of violence and their families.”

A European Union (EU) – United Nations (UN) a 50 million Euro initiative was launched today (27 Sep) with the goal of eliminating violence against women and girls in Latin America.
The UN Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed told the meeting that “Latin America is home to 14 of the 25 countries with the highest rates of femicide in the world” while “98 percent of gender related killings go unprosecuted.”
Mohammed said the 50 million Euro investment announced today “will go into action to address legislative and policy gaps, strengthen the institutions that carry out this work, promote attitudes of gender equality, provide quality services to survivors, and reparations to victims of violence and their families.”
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Maria Mogherini, for her part said the programme’s ambition is “to make a real difference in the lives of girls and women in Argentina, Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico.”
In doing so, she said, “we can change not only the lives of women, but also the lives of men and the entire societies.”
The Spotlight Initiative, with a 500 million Euro commitment from the EU deploys targeted, large-scale investments in Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Pacific and the Caribbean, aimed at achieving significant improvements in the lives of women and girls.
