After a meeting on Darfur, the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean -Pierre Lacroix, told reporters it had been “an important occasion” to express support for “the transition from an international support based on peacekeeping to a form of international support that will be focused on peacebuilding.”

Sudanese Foreign Minister Eldirdiri Mohamed Ahmed said appealed to the international community “to help Sudan undertake its primary responsibility by lifting the sanctions, sanctions that were mostly imposed on Sudan because of what has taken place in Darfur.”

Lacroix, for his part, said “the African Union and the United Nations work and will continue to work very, very closely to promote further peacebuilding and peace consolidation in Darfur, and I think this is happening against the backdrop of a very close coordination and cooperation between the two organizations.”

In July the Security Council extended the mandate of the African Union United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) until 30 June 2019, also stressing that the drawdown of the mission should be based on progress against related indicators and benchmarks.
