5. SOUNDBITE (English) Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations:
“Let us call on all governments to invest efficient resources to make SDG 16.2 a reality for all our children. Creating an enabling environment that protects our children, puts in many many preventions, many barriers so that this is never happening, so that we can reach zero.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations:
“If we are to reach zero in regard to the abuse of a child, we must have the courage to provide the tools that allow us to shine that light. And to provide the basics to which measures our progress. Measures need to be agreed in the name of children. As for indexes, there will always be a challenge, because there must be a first and there might be a last. Our goal should be to ensure that the last is the best. In other words, everyone is at the top of that index.”

Storyline

UN deputy chief Amina J. Mohammed today called on governments and all members of the society to "no longer” tolerate sexual violence and exploitation of children.

Speaking at a high-level meeting “Out of the Shadows: Shining Light on Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation”, UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed today (3 Oct) also called on all governments to “invest efficient resources to make SDG 16.2 a reality for all our children. Creating an enabling environment that protects our children, puts in many many preventions, many barriers so that this is never happening, so that we can reach zero.”

The deputy chief reiterated that “if we are to reach zero in regard to the abuse of a child, we must have the courage to provide the tools that allow us to shine that light. And to provide the basics to which measures our progress.”

She added “measures need to be agreed in the name of children. As for indexes, there will always be a challenge, because there must be a first and there might be a last. Our goal should be to ensure that the last is the best. In other words, everyone is at the top of that index.”

An Economist Intelligence Unit Benchmark Index on Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation was launched at the meeting.

The Index aims help measuring progress toward reaching Sustainable Development Goal target 16.2: ending abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of violence against, and torture of, children.

The Queen Silvia of Sweden and her daughter Princess Madeleine attended the meeting.

The meeting was hosted by the World Childhood Foundation USA and the Permanent Mission of Sweden to the United Nations, the Oak Foundation, the United Nations Office of Partnerships, the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children and Together for Girls.
