Storyline

Students from five universities in South Sudan marched together at the University of Juba where there used to be a battleground from decades ago.

Now it has been transformed into a football pitch where players gathered to kick-off an Inter-University Sports for Peace tournament, organized by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

Yet despite the field’s transformation, South Sudanese people have yet to experience a lasting peace that will bring an end to the new nation’s 5-year civil war.

SOUNDBITE (English) Kocdit Ngor Achiek, Guild President of Juba University’s Student Union:

“We are eager to have a lasting peace in our own country that persuades us to embrace whatever we think and brings our people together to live in synchronization amongst themselves.”

The recently signed revitalized peace deal between South Sudan’s warring parties has provided a glimmer of hope, but these students want to see that hope turned into a reality.

Unified in this pursuit, players from Catholic University, Saint Mary’s College, Starford International University, University of Juba, and Upper Nile University stood side by side to show that competition can be healthy, fun, and peaceful.

As the first match kicked off, players participating in the tournament were determined to demonstrate that peace is their ultimate goal.

SOUNDBITE (English) Eugene Nindorera, Director, Human Rights Division, United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS):
“South Sudan’s greatest asset is you, its vibrant youth. That’s why it’s important for all of you to work together as a team towards a common goal – a goal on the football field, of course! But, also, the common goal of peace.”

To encourage them was a cultural dance group of Rwandan peacekeepers serving in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan. The mission’s support of the tournament is to inspire the future generation of South Sudanese to work together, regardless of winning or losing.

SOUNDBITE (English) Simon Mijok Mijak, Dean of Students’ Affairs, University of Juba:
“You will use whatever capacity you have as students with the help of your professors and administrators, to achieve, realize and cement
the peace we are living in now.”

Running on the field, these youngsters are not only chasing a ball. They are aspiring to be the first generation of South Sudanese to realize their dreams and aspirations in the absence of war.
