Storyline

Alvis and Marnellis fled their home 15 years ago when conflict reached their village in Colombia. They settled near the Venezuelan border here in Las Delicias and built a new home from scratch.

Now they’ve opened their doors to Venezuelans seeking shelter.

SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Marnellis Muentes, displaced Colombian living in Las Delicias:
“We were also displaced by violence in La Guajira and when we arrived here, in this city, we went through the same that they are going through. We were hungry as well. So it moved us to see that, after what we experienced, they are experiencing it too, and we offered them support.”

Marnellis and her husband have taken in 12 Venezuelans. The guests don’t pay rent, but help with chores.

Graciela Sánchez was also displaced by conflict in Colombia. She now hosts 18 Venezuelans. Jenire is one of them.

In all, 23 families in Las Delicias host 130 newcomers. Many hosts were once displaced themselves. UNHCR helps cover water and electricity costs.
