“I think the events over the weekend, including his temporary detainment, highlights the polarization that we are seeing in Venezuela. We call on all actors to refrain from any rhetoric or action that may escalate the already existing tensions, and we reiterate our conviction that the road to recovery depends on Venezuelans themselves and their state institutions, including the National Assembly, searching for a peaceful, negotiated solution that strengthens democratic governance, human rights and the rule of law in Venezuela. And of course, as I said, I think the Secretary-General is following this closely and I think remains concerned.”

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is following events in Venezuela and remains concerned about the situation there, his spokesperson said today (19 Jan).
Responding to a question on the brief detention of the President of the National Assembly over the weekend, Dujarric called on all actors to refrain from any rhetoric or action that may escalate the already existing tensions in Venezuela.
He said, “We reiterate our conviction that the road to recovery depends on Venezuelans themselves and their state institutions, including the National Assembly, searching for a peaceful, negotiated solution that strengthens democratic governance, human rights and the rule of law in Venezuela.”
The ongoing political, human rights and socio-economic developments in the country have led to the outflow of more than three million Venezuelans into neighbouring countries and beyond.
In December, 2018, the United Nations launched a plan to cover urgent humanitarian needs of Venezuelan migrants and refugees. Totaling some $738 million for 2019, it targets 2.7 million people spread across 16 countries. The plan focuses on direct emergency assistance, protection, socio-economic and cultural integration, and strengthening capacities in the receiving countries.
