A five-member delegation headed by the Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix is visiting Lebanon from 9th to 13th March 2019.
As part of this trip Lacroix reviewed the work of UNIFIL Maritime Task Force (MTF), the naval component of the UN peacekeeping mission based in south Lebanon.
The UN peacekeeping chief, UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander, Major General Stefano Del Col, and other senior leadership were briefed about the work of UNIFIL MTF on board the flagship Liberal in the port of Beirut.
Lacroix also travelled to sensitive points along the Blue Line to see the construction of the T-wall near Kfar Kila, to be updated about the work of UN peacekeepers along the Blue Line and to see firsthand the key role UNIFIL’s liaison team plays in deconflicting tension.
The Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations also visited UN position 1-32A, the venue where the regular Tripartite forum takes place.
This regular meeting, chaired by the UNIFIL head of Mission and Force Commander, was with senior officials from the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Tripartite meetings have been held regularly under the auspices of UNIFIL since the end of the 2006 war. They have become an essential conflict management and confidence building mechanism between the parties.
