Storyline

A peace tournament sponsored by the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has inspired hope among residents of Yei, a small town in the south of the country whose neighbouring villages have been enduring a new wave of fighting and displacement.

On a sunny day, a football match kicks off.

It is the final - a culmination of two weeks of footballing competition in the name of peace.

Dubbed the Yei Peace Tournament, these footballers have been scoring goals for peace – a theme the organisers chose for the contest.

Thousands of sports fans cheered them on, jumping up and down in excitement whenever goals were scored.

Some explained what the experience meant to them.

SOUNDBITE (English) Richard Koffi Moro, footballer:
“It means that we have peace among ourselves the players and the people and plus the soldiers also we have peace among ourselves.”

For others, it was more than just a football tournament - it brought people together, and reunited friends who had been separated by conflict for a long time.

SOUNDBITE (English) Stella Roba, Yei citizen:
“There is someone I had not seen for almost six years, but I managed to meet [them] today so I am thankful to this peace tournament because it [has united] us with our brothers and sisters who went to Uganda and came back.”

A government official at the event reiterated the need to make peace a reality in all aspects of life, in order to attain durable peace in the country.

SOUNDBITE (English) Emmanuel Adil Anthony, Governor of Yei River state.
“We need to put peace in practice as we talk peace, we sing peace, we play peace, as through football like this – it is what we do to embrace peace, and I am thankful for this occasion. We believe that we will do similar occasions like this in some of our counties so that all our young people, both men and women, participate in this effort towards restoring long lasting and sustainable peace.”

There was a musical interlude too, with spectators dancing and singing along to a peace-themed song.

Speaking at the event, a United Nations human rights officer urged everyone to become a peace agent.

SOUNDBITE (English) Arthur Beingana, United Nations Mission in South Sudan Human Rights Officer:
“When we are having this kind of games, we are sending out the players, the captains, the coaches, and us the spectators or the morale boosters, to be good ambassadors in our community where we come from, to take the message of peace.”

Peace was the buzzword, and those who had scored the most number of goals in its name, savoured their crowning moment.

The Yei Peace Tournament was the second of its kind to be organized by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, as a part of its mandate to support the peace process and promote peace among South Sudanese.
