“We need a stronger commitment to a rules based order with an effective United Nations as its centre. We need a networked multilateralism with close cooperation among international, and regional organizations, including development banks. Storyline

Marking the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, a senior UN official said, “we must show that multilateralism can respond to global anxieties and deliver a fair globalization that lifts all.”

Speaking on behalf of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at a high level plenary meeting, Chef de Cabinet Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti told the General Assembly today (24 Apr) in New York that “we need a stronger commitment to a rules based order with an effective United Nations as its centre. We need a network of multilateralism with close cooperation among international, and regional organizations, including development banks.”

Viotti continued, “since governments and international organizations cannot do it alone, we need an inclusive multilateralism rooted in partnerships with the business community, civil society, parliaments, academic and philanthropic communities and other stakeholders, particular young people.”

President of the UN General Assembly Maria Fernanda Espinosa said, “in order to achieve and sustainable peace and sustainable development, multilateralism is not just the most efficient way, but the only possible way.”

She added, “We must put an end to false concept that multilateralism undermines the sovereignty of State, but in fact it fosters the sovereignty.”

Espinosa also stated that leaders had "a single opportunity to tip the balance on the right side of the history.”

She stressed, “When people question, the answer should be more multilateralism, more cooperation; when faced with mistrust, the response must be more efficiency, more transparency; when faced with violence, the response must be more diplomacy, more dialogue; when faced with unilateralism, the response must be more solidarity and greater collective actions.”
