Storyline

Teachers in Honduras’s toughest neighbourhoods work against the odds to make their schools safe havens where children can learn.

UNHCR, working with Save the Children, has released a study looking at risks of forced displacement for teachers in a country where, according to government statistics, more than 700 schools and 180,000 students are at risk.

This classroom in Honduras is home to everyday heroes. Teachers like Karen go beyond their lessons to give children surrounded by gang violence a safe place to learn.

“With the children we’re seeing more incidents of violence, and shortened attention spans. They don’t see the importance in doing homework. It is very hard on teachers, because in addition to being teachers we also have to play the role of psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors, even for parents who come to us for help to deal with situations at home.”

Schools like this one strive to be havens. Yet teaching comes often at a high cost. 90 teachers have been killed in Honduras since 2010 while others fall victims to extortions and harassment. According to the government, more than 700 schools across Honduras are at risk affecting more than 180,000 students and 60,000 teachers.

With the support from UNHCR and partners dozens of teachers have taken the lead to seek solutions by assessing risks and developing plans to protect staff and students alike.

Those efforts will help guide the government response to make Honduras’s schools safe for teaching, and learning and foster hope beyond these school walls.
