Storyline

Carmen is a 34-year-old Ecuadorian who runs a hostel in El Juncal, in the northern Imbabura province. When Carmen saw Venezuelans arriving in Ecuador, many making an exhausting journey on foot, she decided to offer up shelter in her hostel for free.

Since she began hosting Venezuelans, Carmen’s had some 20 people sleeping there most nights – and up to 70 people on some occasions.

SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Carmen, Hostel Owner:
“They can have a shower, or a meal, or a place to sleep.”

After being welcomed at Carmen’s, some have sought to stay in El Juncal, and are now living and working there.

SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Daniel, Venezuelan Migrant:
“Someone told us about a lady named Carmela and that she could help us out with food, a place to sleep, and to wash. We were tired and dirty, and we came here. We went to this lady, and now she’s become like a mom to us.”

Often people arrive dehydrated, exhausted and with health problems. In addition, during the journey they are exposed to greater conditions of vulnerability, as they are more likely to be victims of robbery, violence and trafficking networks.

SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Carmen, Hostel Owner:
“Of all my ‘children’ who see what I’m doing, most come help me serve meals, most sit down to talk, and to listen, and to cry alongside each other. I know that among them, someone will be generous. That’s the only thing that matters in life. I may not have money, but I have a heart for those who come”.

In 2018, nearly a million Venezuelans entered Ecuador – at least 30 percent of them walking part of the way to get there.
