“So, this week as we look to the future of work let us say once and for all that modern slavery has no place in the modern world. And let us commit ourselves to a future in which all the people of the world can be employed in dignity, safety and freedom.”

“The ILO estimates that 150 billion dollars of illegal profit is generated from forced labour each year, a quarter of a million dollars every minute of every day. Every penny of that is being diverted from the pockets of responsible business men and women.”

“Last year the UK, United States, Canada, New Zealand and Australia agreed to use the collective purchasing power of our public sectors, worth more than 600 billion dollars annually to demand higher ethical standards in our supply chains and crack down on modern slavery. I want to see other nations joining us in this.”

“So, as well as talking to governments, multilaterals and NGOs today I want to call on ordinary shoppers the world over to vote with their wallets. To shun those companies that do not make the ethical grade and instead support their rivals who take an active role in fighting modern slavery.”

British Prime Minister Theresa May said modern slavery “has no place in the modern world” adding, “let us commit ourselves to a future in which all the people of the world can be employed in dignity, safety and freedom.”
Speaking at the 108th International Labour Conference today in Geneva, May focused her address on the issue of modern slavery and called on governments, businesses and consumers to do their part to end this crime.

May said the ILO estimates that 150 billion USD of illegal profit is generated from forced labour each year, a quarter of a million dollars every minute of every day. She added, “Every penny of that is being diverted from the pockets of responsible business men and women.”
The British Prime Minister called on “ordinary shoppers the world over to vote with their wallets; to shun those companies that do not make the ethical grade and instead support their rivals who take an active role in fighting modern slavery.”
More than 40 heads of government and state are scheduled to address the two-week long Conference, which is the 108th session of the ILC. During the Conference nearly 6,000 delegates – representing governments, workers and employers – will discuss transformative changes in the world of work and consider the adoption of a landmark ILO Centenary Declaration on the future of work. They will also discuss violence and harassment at the workplace with a view to adopting a new international instrument.
