4. SOUNDBITE (English) David Shearer, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in South Sudan:
“The ceasefire is holding, with exception of one area in the very south of the country, in the Equatorias. There’s been a significant drop off in the political violence between the parties. There’s been some cattle raiding and inter-ethnic violence, but that is in some ways a little separate. The humanitarians are reporting better access for their humanitarian activities, which is positive. And since the peace agreement there’s been about 500,000 people who have returned to their homes.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) David Shearer, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in South Sudan:
“The grassroots and what we are seeing on the ground is moving faster than what we are seeing in terms of the development of the peace process, at the national and the, between the elites. And the implementation of the peace process, particularly the unification of the forces, the allocation of the portfolios in a unitary transitional government, is being slow. There’s been some other delays as well.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) David Shearer, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in South Sudan:
“What we are pushing for very much is a transitional phase, a transitional component of the peace agreement starting off with no further delays. And secondly, making sure that the two major protagonists, President Salva Kiir and Dr. Riek Machar come together and start meeting regularly before joining together in the government in November.”
