Storyline

The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) built a football field for the local community on the outskirts of Juba town, aiming to unite people for peace through sports.

A much-awaited football match kicks off on the outskirts of Juba town.

Two teams from the same club are playing against each other and are testing their pitch. It’s a newly constructed pitch, and it has come alive because of help from peacekeepers from Thailand and Nepal, who work for the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

Players who have had the challenge of playing on rough grounds, and have also been unable to play well during the rainy season, cannot hide their excitement about the possibilities the well-levelled football pitch offers for their club which has been in existence for four years now.

For the footballers, the pitch will keep them busier than usual as they look towards improving their skills.

Happily watching the first match, members of the community hope to set aside their differences as they cheer the teams engaging in the games.

Alongside the help received grading the football pitch, the peacekeepers also put up a volleyball area and gave various sporting items to the community.

“Such projects will be a foundation of peace in the Republic of South Sudan. This kind of support to the local sports club will not only have physical benefits of playing sports and being active, but also the mental health benefits to the people as well.”

For the youth who have taken to the pitch, and future generations of the 3,000-member community, this seems like just the beginning of bigger things to come.
