“The resolution will enter into force on 20 August this year and will be applied to children born in Colombian territory since 19 August 2015, approximately 24,000 children fit that description, according to this information received from our team. The government of Colombia will contribute to prevent this vulnerable population from becoming stateless, representing a very important step to guarantee its integral protection. IOM together with the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration of the United States Department of State will technically support the Colombian National Registry Office in the implementation of this resolution as well as in the dissemination of the campaign ‘Primero la Niñez’. The campaign seeks to inform the target population on how to access this measure, what procedures to follow, the date of entry into force of the initiative, as well as the role of the different entities.”

“Our organization calculates about 1.9 million of some 4 million Venezuelans who have left the country, 1.9 million, almost half, have achieved some kind of regularization status with the different countries in the region.”

“The large number of deaths of Venezuelans who crossed out of the country this year – we are calculating 82 so far through August 4 - which is about 60 percent of the 137 Venezuelan migrants we’ve confirmed dying on the road since 2014. So, 60 percent of that number occurred this year. Right now, 82 fatalities is almost twice what we recorded all of last year. And we just mentioned the countries where Venezuelans have perished while migrating, include Curacao, Aruba, the US Mexico border, Colombia, Ecuador, Trinidad and Tobago, and Brazil.”

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) today (6 Aug) welcomed the decision made by the Government of Colombia granting nationality to children born in the country, to Venezuelan parents. This measure will benefit more than 24,000 children who are at risk of statelessness.
Speaking to journalists in Geneva, IOM spokesperson Joel Millman said, “the government of Colombia will contribute to prevent this vulnerable population from becoming stateless, representing a very important step to guarantee its integral protection.”
The resolution will enter into force on 20 August 2019 and will be applied to children born in Colombian territory since 19 August 2015.
A campaign supported by IOM, Millman said, “seeks to inform the targeted population on how to access this measure, what procedures to follow, the date of entry into force of the initiative, as well as the role of the different entities.”
Millman said IOM calculates that “of some 4 million Venezuelans who have left the country, 1.9 million, almost half, have achieved some kind of regularization status with the different countries in the region.”
The spokesperson also informed that 82 Venezuelans who crossed out of the country this year have died on the road to their destination. This, he said, represents “about 60 percent of the 137 Venezuelan migrants we’ve confirmed dying on the road since 2014.”
According to Migración Colombia through its Administrative Special Unit, as of 30 June 2019, more than 1.4 million Venezuelans are in Colombia, being the first receiving country in the region.
