3. SOUNDBITE (English) Jürgen Schulz, Deputy Permanent Representative of Germany to the United Nations:
“North Korea must take concrete steps towards its complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization. We urge North Korea to engage in meaningful negotiations with the US as agreed between President Trump and Kim Jong Un on 30 June. Serious efforts by North Korea to re-engage diplomatically and make progress on denuclearisation are the best only way to guarantee security and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the region, as well as a brighter future for the people of North Korea.”

In a joint statement, the United Kingdom, France and Germany condemned a series of ballistic missiles launched by North Korea in the past weeks and called on the country to take “concrete steps towards its complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization.”
Speaking to reporters in New York today (27 Aug) following closed consultation on the matter, Germany’s deputy ambassador to the UN, Jürgen Schulz, said the three European countries (E3) viewed the launches as provocative and in violation of UN Security Council resolutions.
Joined by his British and French colleagues, Schulz told reporters that the E3 urges North Korea to “engage in meaningful negotiations with the US as agreed between President Trump and Kim Jong Un on 30 June.” He added, “Serious efforts by North Korea to re-engage diplomatically and make progress on denuclearisation are the best only way to guarantee security and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the region, as well as a brighter future for the people of North Korea.”
The German ambassador said international sanctions “must remain in place and be fully and strictly enforced until North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes are dismantled. It is vital that the Security Council shows unity in upholding its resolutions.”
