“The World Food Programme today said that it is organizing an airlift from the UN hub in Panama of storage units, generators, and prefab offices for two logistics hubs to be established on the main islands. It is also providing satellite equipment to ensure connectivity for emergency responders across the impacted islands. The agency has also purchased eight tons of ready-to-eat meals and is arranging its transportation to the Bahamas, so they can be distributed to the affected populations.”

“The Secretary-General said he is deeply concerned for the tens of thousands of people impacted in Grand Bahama and Abaco. He also called on donors to provide funding for humanitarian response and recovery at first as soon as the requirements are known.”

It also providing satellite equipment to ensure connectivity for emergency responders across the impacted islands.
Speaking to reporters today (05 Sep) in New York, UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said that WFP has also” purchased eight tons of ready-to-eat meals and is arranging its transportation to the Bahamas, so they can be distributed to the affected populations.”
Dujarric added, “given the severity of the situation, WFP said limited emergency operations of 5.4 million dollars for three months to assist 39 thousand people has now been set up.”
In a statement issued on Wednesday (04 Sep), UN chief António Guterres said that “he is deeply concerned for the tens of thousands of people impacted in Grand Bahama and Abaco. He also called on donors to provide funding for humanitarian response and recovery at first as soon as the requirements are known.”
The UN relief chief who heads up the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Mark Lowcock, travelled to the Bahamas on Wednesday to help assess what is needed from the international community, and express the United Nations’ solidarity with the people and national leaders.
Lowcock also announced that the UN Central Emergency Response Fund will provide an immediate one million dollars for urgent life-saving activities in Abaco and Grand Bahama.
