Storyline

In the remote mountains of the Al Haouz province in Morocco, farmers prepare their products, getting them ready for sale.

In a region where unemployment is among the highest in the world, the changes have been remarkable. For many years, young farmers were migrating to the cities. climate change raised concerns about shrinking harvests, and farming technology handed down through the generations was antiquated.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Abderrahman Aissaouin, President, Touffaha Cooperative:
“In the past, our parents used to handle trees in an ineffective way, randomly. They planted apple trees, but they earned nothing.”

In order to turn their lives around, adopt new techniques and sell their products to a wider market, farming cooperatives were formed with the support of the International Fund for Agricultural Development, and the Government of the Kingdom of Morocco.

This IFAD-supported project has contributed to creating jobs in the Atlas Mountains, and reversing the steady flow of migration.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Brahim Laaouina, Member, Agadir Igoudar Cooperative:
“Before joining this cooperative, I had left the village. I was working in the city. But when the cooperative was being formed, I got a call from my friends, thank Allah. Since 2014 I have been back in my village.”

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Karima Benaicha, Member, El Oulfa Cheese Cooperative:

For many young people in the Al Haouz region, the cooperatives have improved production techniques, and strengthened their bargaining power, leading to a new sense of pride in their products.
