Storyline

The IMF’s new Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva arrived for work Tuesday (1 Oct) morning in Washington, DC.

Bulgarian economist Georgieva, 64-years-old, was the only nominee for the role. She is the second woman to lead the IMF, and the first Managing Director from an emerging market nation in the 75-year history of the Fund.

“I am very excited by the work we have to do,” she told reporters gathered at the entrance.

“It is going to be a challenging time ahead of us, but we are highly motivated – my team and me – to work with our 189 members to build strong economies so people’s lives are improved on the basis of sound monetary, fiscal and structural policies.”

She takes the reins at an uncertain time for the global economy with a landscape of slowing growth and rising trade tensions.

The IMF has forecast that measures already announced may cut as much as 0.8 percent off the global economy in 2020 alone.

Georgieva, who joins the IMF from the position as CEO of the World Bank, will deliver her first major policy speech October 8th in Washington.

The IMF is expected to unveil its forecast for global growth when it publishes the World Economic Outlook October 15th at the beginning of the Annual Meetings.
