6. SOUNDBITE (English) Omer Mohamed Ahmed Siddig, Permanent Representative of the Republic of the Sudan to the United Nations:
“The period witnessed by Sudan, after the success of the glorious revolution in December and the transition to a civilian government, requires that the international community and the Council in particular stand behind the Sudanese government to support the priorities it has place for the transition period. At the top of that list is lasting peace throughout the country and mitigating the consequences of the conflict and preparing the conditions for a democratic transition at the end of the transition period of 39 months.”
7. Zoom out, Council
The Security Council unanimously today (31 Oct) adopted a resolution that extends the mandate of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) for a one-year period.
Ambassador Jonathan Allen of the United Kingdom, one of the penholders of the resolution, said “UNAMID has an important role to play in creating a conducive environment for peace and reconciliation, which is particularly important at this critical time for the peace process.”
By extending UNAMID's mandate for 12 months and maintaining its current footprint in Darfur, he said, “we have also recognised UNAMID's vital role while responding to the government of Sudan's request to avoid any security vacuum in Darfur.”
Sudanese Ambassador Omer Mohamed Ahmed Siddig told the Council that “the success of the glorious revolution in December and the transition to a civilian government, requires that the international community and the Council in particular stand behind the Sudanese government to support the priorities it has place for the transition period.”
At the top of that list, he said, “is lasting peace throughout the country and mitigating the consequences of the conflict and preparing the conditions for a democratic transition at the end of the transition period of 39 months.”
The resolution decides that the mission will continue to implement its mandate as set out in resolution 2429, while focusing on three specific areas as set out in the draft. These include: support to the peace process, support to peacebuilding activities, and the protection of civilians.
