“The situation in the Sahel is of serious concern and urgent action is needed. It is therefore encouraging that the G5 Sahel joint force has increased its operational temple. I welcome the commitments and determination of the G5 countries to overcome the many challenges they face in operationalizing the joint force.”

“Over the past six months the security situation in the Sahel has continued to deteriorate. Attacks attributed to or claimed by terrorist groups against the security forces and the civilian population have multiplied, as have violent incidents pitting members of various communities against one another.”

“On 6 November in Bangou, in the northeast of Burkina Faso, some 40 civilians and soldiers were killed during an attack that was attributed to terrorist groups. In the past ten days, nearly 100 elements of the Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger security forces have lost their lives in a spate of attacks primarily targeting the Liptako-Gourma triangle.”

“The support of the countries in the region, the African Union, the United Nations and the entire international community, is an absolute priority to win the fight against terrorism in the region. As rightly emphasized by the Secretary-General in is his report, and I quote, ‘terrorism is a global issue and the entire international community has a responsibility to contribute to its defeat.’”

Assistant Secretary-General Bintou Keita today (20 Nov) told the Security Council “the situation in the Sahel is of serious concern and urgent action is needed,” and welcomed the commitments and determination of the G-5 Sahel countries to overcome the many challenges they face in operationalizing the Joint Force.
Keita told the Council that “over the past six months the security situation in the Sahel has continued to deteriorate.”
She noted that “attacks attributed to or claimed by terrorist groups against the security forces and the civilian population have multiplied, as have violent incidents pitting members of various communities against one another.”
Keita said, “on 6 November in Bangou, in the northeast of Burkina Faso, some 40 civilians and soldiers were killed during an attack that was attributed to terrorist groups. In the past ten days, nearly 100 elements of the Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger security forces have lost their lives in a spate of attacks primarily targeting the Liptako-Gourma triangle.”
In her address to the Council, the Permanent Observer of the African Union (AU) to the United Nations, Fatima Kyari Mohammed, said “the support of the countries in the region, the African Union, the United Nations and the entire international community, is an absolute priority to win the fight against terrorism in the region.”
Kyari Mohammed quoted Secretary-General António Guterres from his report on the situation in the Sahel and said, “terrorism is a global issue and the entire international community has a responsibility to contribute to its defeat.”
The G5 joint force, comprised of five countries (Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger)
from the Sahel region that have been hard hit by terrorism was formed at a summit in Nouakchott, Mauritania, on 16 February 2014.
